How to Choose Diamond Tooling for Concrete Grinding: Bond, Grit and Segments

Diamond tooling is where grinding jobs are won or lost. The same machine can cut fast and clean or glaze over and crawl, depending entirely on the segments bolted underneath it. Here is how diamond tooling actually works, the bond rule that confuses everyone the first time, and how to match grit, segments and PCD to the concrete in front of you.

How a diamond segment works

A segment is industrial diamond grit sintered into a metal matrix — the bond. The diamonds do the cutting; the bond's job is to wear away at a controlled rate, shedding dull diamonds and exposing sharp ones. A segment that stops wearing stops cutting. That single idea explains almost every tooling decision.

The bond rule (it runs backwards)

The rule that trips people up: hard concrete takes a soft bond, soft concrete takes a hard bond. Hard, dense concrete produces little abrasive dust, so a hard bond never wears — the diamonds polish flat and the segment glazes, riding the surface instead of cutting it. A soft bond keeps releasing fresh diamond. Soft or abrasive concrete does the opposite: it eats bond so fast that a soft segment can disappear in a day, so a hard bond is needed to slow the wear down. Medium bond is the starting point when the slab is unknown; adjust from how the segment behaves in the first passes.

Glazed segments look shiny and smooth and the machine suddenly leaves no dust. The fix is to re-expose the diamond — run a few passes on an abrasive surface (a sand-sprinkled patch of slab works) — and then switch to a softer bond.

Grit: sequence, don't skip

  • Coarse metals (16–30 grit) — heavy removal, levelling and opening the surface to a CSP 2–3 profile for coatings (see the CSP guide for matching profile to system).
  • Medium metals (40–80 grit) — refining scratch pattern after coarse cuts, and the typical finish point before coating.
  • Resin-bond pads — the fine steps for grind-and-seal and polished finishes, run in sequence after the metals.

Each step should remove the scratches of the one before it. Jumping more than one grit leaves deep scratches that reappear under a sealer or clear coat — rework that costs more than the skipped pass saved.

Segment count and shape

Fewer, smaller segments concentrate the machine's weight onto less contact area — more pressure per segment, more aggression, the right call on hard, burnished concrete. More or larger segments spread the load for a smoother, slower cut that suits soft slabs and finishing passes. Bar and arrow segments clear material and coatings aggressively; round segments run smoother and finer.

PCD: the coatings killer

For thick epoxy, glue, mastic and paint, standard diamonds clog and burn. PCD (polycrystalline diamond) shoes use a solid diamond edge that shears coatings off the slab instead of grinding through them. Two things to know: PCD is directional — it must run the rotation it was made for — and it leaves a deep scratch pattern, so always follow it with metal-bond passes before coating.

Starting points only — slab hardness varies across a single floor. Test a small area and adjust bond and grit from how the segments wear.

Machine and dust are half the system

Tooling only performs when it matches the machine's weight and head speed — quick-change Redi-Lock style pads pair with planetary grinders like the Canopus CS250, while heavy coating removal may call for a scarifier before the grinder ever starts. And grinding concrete means silica: run a HEPA extractor sized to the machine — it protects the crew and keeps the diamonds cutting concrete instead of riding on dust.
