Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic Floor Coatings: Which System Is Right for Your Project?
Jun 18 , 2026
Two of the most common questions we get from contractors and specifiers at Canopus Supply: "Should I use epoxy or polyaspartic?" and "What's the difference?" Both are excellent coating systems for concrete floors — but they have very different performance profiles, application windows, and cost structures. Here's how to choose.
Quick Comparison
| Property | Epoxy | Polyaspartic |
|---|---|---|
| Cure time (foot traffic) | 12–24 hours | 1–6 hours |
| Full cure | 5–7 days | 24 hours |
| UV stability | Yellows over time | Excellent (non-yellowing) |
| Temperature application range | 10°C to 30°C | -20°C to 50°C |
| Film build per coat | High (ideal for broadcast) | Lower (topcoat/sealer) |
| Chemical resistance | Excellent | Very good |
| Abrasion resistance | Very good | Excellent |
| Relative material cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical use | Base coat, broadcast systems | Topcoat, fast-turnaround jobs |
When to Choose Epoxy
Epoxy is the workhorse of commercial and industrial floor coating systems. It offers excellent chemical resistance, high film build, and strong adhesion to properly prepared concrete. Choose epoxy when:
- You need a high-build base coat for a broadcast flake or quartz system
- The floor is in an interior environment not exposed to direct UV (warehouses, manufacturing, parkades)
- Budget is a primary consideration and cure time is not critical
- You need maximum chemical resistance (food processing, industrial, pharmaceutical)
- The project allows for overnight cure before reopening
Note: Epoxy will yellow and chalk when exposed to UV light. For exterior or sun-exposed areas, always topcoat with a UV-stable aliphatic urethane or polyaspartic — such as ResinTech CRU.
When to Choose Polyaspartic
Polyaspartic coatings cure extremely fast and offer outstanding UV stability. They've become the preferred topcoat for high-end decorative systems and fast-turnaround commercial jobs. Choose polyaspartic when:
- Fast return to service is critical (retail, restaurants, occupied buildings)
- The floor is exposed to UV or natural light (showrooms, exterior-adjacent areas)
- You need a non-yellowing, colour-stable finish
- Application temperatures are outside the epoxy window (cold weather or summer heat)
- You want a single-coat topcoat over a broadcast system
The Most Common System: Epoxy Base + Polyaspartic Topcoat
In practice, the most popular commercial floor coating system combines both products:
- Epoxy base coat — high build, strong adhesion, chemical resistance
- Broadcast layer (optional) — decorative flake or quartz for texture and aesthetics
- Polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane topcoat — UV-stable, abrasion-resistant, fast-curing clear finish
This system gives you the best of both worlds: the film build and cost efficiency of epoxy with the UV stability and fast cure of polyaspartic. It's the standard for garage floors, showrooms, retail spaces, and commercial kitchens across BC.
ResinTech Coating Systems — Engineered for BC Contractors
ResinTech is a professional-grade coating brand available exclusively through Canopus Supply in British Columbia. Every ResinTech product is formulated for demanding commercial and industrial applications:
