Waterproofing Concrete Floors and Decks: Tremco and ResinTech Systems Explained

Water is concrete's worst enemy. Left unprotected, moisture penetrates concrete slabs, corrodes rebar, causes freeze-thaw spalling, and leads to costly structural repairs. For parkades, balconies, mechanical rooms, and exterior decks across British Columbia, a properly specified waterproofing system is not optional — it's essential.

Canopus Supply stocks waterproofing and protective coating systems from Tremco and ResinTech, two established manufacturers of commercial and industrial concrete protection systems. Here's how to choose the right system for your project.

When Is Waterproofing Required?

Any concrete surface exposed to water, moisture vapor, or freeze-thaw cycling should be waterproofed or protected with a moisture-tolerant coating system. Common applications include:

  • Parkade decks and ramps (vehicle traffic + water + de-icing salts)
  • Balconies and exterior terraces
  • Mechanical and utility rooms
  • Commercial kitchens and food processing areas
  • Below-grade slabs and foundation walls
  • Pool surrounds and wet areas

Tremco Waterproofing Systems

Tremco is a manufacturer of waterproofing and sealant systems for commercial construction. Canopus Supply stocks Tremco's commercial waterproofing product line, including:

Tremco Vulkem Series — Polyurethane Traffic Coatings

The Tremco Vulkem series is the industry standard for vehicular and pedestrian traffic-bearing waterproofing membranes on parkade decks, balconies, and exposed concrete surfaces. Vulkem systems are elastomeric polyurethane membranes that bridge cracks, accommodate structural movement, and provide long-term waterproofing under traffic loads.

  • Vulkem 350NF — Base coat membrane for traffic-bearing waterproofing systems
  • Vulkem 950NF — Two-component polyurethane wearing course for traffic-bearing deck systems
  • Vulkem 346 — Aliphatic one-component polyurethane traffic-deck top coat

Vulkem systems are specified by engineers and architects on parkade and balcony projects across BC. They meet the requirements of ASTM C836, C957, and Canadian building codes for traffic-bearing waterproofing membranes.

ResinTech Protective Coating Systems for Wet Areas

For interior wet areas, mechanical rooms, and commercial kitchens where a seamless, chemical-resistant, and moisture-tolerant floor system is required, ResinTech epoxy and urethane systems are the professional choice:

  • ResinTech TUE — 100% Solids Epoxy — Low-VOC, 100% solids epoxy base coat with excellent moisture tolerance after cure. Ideal as a base coat in wet-area floor systems where a seamless, impermeable surface is required.
  • ResinTech CRU — Chemical Resistant Urethane — Chemical and abrasion-resistant topcoat for wet-area floors. Resists cleaning chemicals, food acids, and standing water. UV-stable for areas with natural light exposure.
  • ResinTech HPP — Polyaspartic Topcoat — Fast-cure topcoat for wet-area floors requiring rapid return to service. Ideal for commercial kitchens and food service areas where downtime must be minimized.

Choosing the Right System: Tremco vs. ResinTech

Application Recommended System
Parkade deck (vehicle traffic) Tremco Vulkem 350NF base + 950NF topcoat
Balcony / exterior terrace Tremco Vulkem traffic membrane system
Commercial kitchen floor ResinTech TUE base + CRU topcoat
Mechanical / utility room ResinTech TUE base + CRU or TCU topcoat
Food processing floor ResinTech TUE (low-VOC) + CRU topcoat
Warehouse with moisture concerns ResinTech TUE base coat (moisture-tolerant cure)

Surface Preparation for Waterproofing Systems

Waterproofing system performance depends entirely on surface preparation. For Tremco Vulkem systems, the concrete must be clean, sound, and profiled to CSP 3–4 minimum. For ResinTech epoxy systems, CSP 2–3 is typically required. All cracks must be repaired and moisture levels confirmed within product limits before application.
