Tremco Vulkem® 191 QD Primer

Quick-Dry, Single-Component Urethane Primer for Traffic Deck Systems | Brand: Tremco

Tremco Vulkem® 191 QD is a quick-drying, single-component urethane primer for use under Vulkem traffic deck and waterproofing membrane systems. Applied to properly prepared concrete and metal substrates, it is designed to improve adhesion of the Vulkem base coat and help reduce outgassing that can cause pinholes or adhesion issues in the membrane. Confirm suitability, primer requirements, coverage, and recoat windows against the current Tremco TDS, SDS, and system specification before use.

Professional system note: Vulkem 191 QD must be used as part of an approved Tremco traffic deck or waterproofing system. Do not apply the Vulkem base coat before the primer has fully dried to the specified tack-free state. Confirm primer requirements and recoat windows with the current Tremco system specification.

Product Description

Vulkem 191 QD is formulated for accelerated dry times compared to standard Vulkem primers, allowing the Vulkem base coat to be applied sooner and helping to reduce overall system installation time; confirm dry times against the current TDS as they vary with temperature and humidity. Its single-component formulation requires no mixing. The QD (Quick Dry) designation indicates an accelerated dry time compared to standard Vulkem primers; confirm performance against the TDS for your specific site conditions.

The primer is designed to penetrate and seal the concrete surface, improving the bonding interface between the substrate and the Vulkem urethane membrane. On metal substrates, it provides a compatible bonding interface for the Vulkem system. Proper substrate preparation and primer application are critical to the long-term performance of the complete traffic deck system.

Key Characteristics

  • Quick-dry formulation — accelerated tack-free time compared to standard primers; confirm dry times against the TDS as they vary with temperature and humidity.
  • Single-component — no mixing required; apply directly from the container.
  • Designed to improve adhesion — formulated to improve the bond between concrete or metal substrate and the Vulkem urethane membrane; final adhesion depends on substrate condition, preparation, and application method.
  • Designed to reduce outgassing — formulated to help reduce outgassing and pinholing in the applied membrane; confirm requirements against the TDS.
  • System-compatible — designed for use with Vulkem 350NF, 360NF, and other approved Tremco traffic deck and waterproofing systems; confirm system compatibility against the current Tremco specification.
  • Concrete and metal substrates — confirm substrate preparation requirements against the TDS before application.

Typical Applications

  • Primer for Vulkem 350NF / 360NF traffic deck systems on concrete
  • Primer for Vulkem waterproofing membrane systems on concrete and metal
  • Parkade and parking structure deck primer coat
  • Podium and pedestrian deck substrate preparation
  • Metal substrate priming for Vulkem system compatibility

Surface Preparation

Concrete must be mechanically profiled (shot-blasted or ground), clean, dry, and free of laitance, oil, grease, curing compounds, and incompatible coatings. Metal must be clean, dry, and free of rust, mill scale, and oil. Conduct moisture testing on concrete before application. Refer to the current Tremco system specification for substrate-specific preparation requirements and acceptable moisture levels.

Application Instructions

  1. Substrate preparation: Prepare the substrate as described above. Confirm moisture levels are within acceptable limits per the TDS.
  2. Application: Apply Vulkem 191 QD by roller or brush at the coverage rate specified in the TDS. Ensure uniform, thin coverage across the entire substrate area.
  3. Dry time: Allow the primer to dry to the specified tack-free state before applying the Vulkem base coat. Do not apply the base coat before the primer is fully dry.
  4. Recoat window: Apply the Vulkem base coat within the recoat window specified in the TDS. Do not exceed the maximum recoat time without re-priming.

Limitations

  • Must be used as part of an approved Tremco system — not a standalone waterproofing product.
  • Do not apply to damp, contaminated, or unsound substrates.
  • Do not apply below minimum temperature or when condensation or rain is expected before cure; confirm temperature requirements against the TDS.
  • Do not apply the base coat before the primer has reached the specified tack-free state.
  • Do not exceed the maximum recoat window without re-priming.

Storage & Shelf Life

Store in original, unopened containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Confirm shelf life and storage conditions against the product label and current SDS.

Health & Safety

Read the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use. Contains isocyanate and solvent components — wear gloves, eye protection, and ensure adequate ventilation. Refer to the SDS for full hazard classification and first-aid measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Vulkem 191 QD and standard Vulkem primers?

The QD designation indicates a quick-dry formulation with an accelerated tack-free time compared to standard Vulkem primers. Confirm dry times against the current TDS for your specific site conditions.

Is Vulkem 191 QD required for all Vulkem systems?

Primer requirements vary by system and substrate. Refer to the current Tremco system specification for your specific application to confirm whether Vulkem 191 QD or another primer is required. Contact Canopus Supply for guidance.

Can it be used on metal substrates?

Vulkem 191 QD is designed for use on metal substrates as part of an approved Tremco system. Ensure the metal is clean, dry, and free of rust, mill scale, and oil before application. Confirm suitability against the current TDS.

What is the recoat window after applying the primer?

The recoat window is temperature and humidity dependent. Refer to the current Tremco TDS for specific tack-free times and maximum recoat windows. Do not exceed the maximum recoat time without re-priming.
